Users impacted by a major hack of the Trust Wallet browser extension are facing further setbacks. The wallet provider has confirmed its extension was temporarily removed from the Chrome Web Store, delaying the deployment of a critical tool for victims to file claims.

The removal occurred due to a bug in the Chrome Web Store platform, according to Trust Wallet CEO Eowyn Chen. The company encountered this issue while trying to publish an updated version of the extension.

This crucial update was intended to include a verification feature, allowing affected users to securely confirm ownership of their compromised wallets and initiate the process for reimbursement.

Chen stated that Google has recognized the problem and is working to resolve it internally. She concurrently warned users to be vigilant against fraudulent copies of the Trust Wallet extension that may appear online during this period.

This disruption compounds the ongoing challenges from a security breach that started on December 25. On that date, Trust Wallet confirmed a malicious version of its extension had been illicitly distributed via the official Chrome Web Store.

The harmful software, version 2.68, enabled attackers to access private wallet information and perform unauthorized transfers, resulting in losses estimated in the millions of dollars.
