Japanese Energy Company TEPCO to Venture into Green Mining
A subsidiary of TEPCO, a Tokyo-based company, is venturing into Bitcoin mining with the goal of using renewable energy that would otherwise go to waste.
The subsidiary, Agile Energy X, is experimenting with using excess solar energy to power its mining equipment in an effort to increase green energy utilization.
This idea is inspired by the Japanese practice of production control, where renewable energy production is sometimes reduced to balance supply and demand.
Agile Energy X has installed mining machines near solar farms in Gunma and Tochigi prefectures, and Japan has an estimated 1,920 gigawatt-hours of energy subject to output control each year, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 450,000 households.
