CFTC, SEC Declare End to ‘Turf War’ with Unified ‘Project Crypto’

In a move signaling a major policy shift, the CFTC and SEC are partnering on “Project Crypto” to overhaul rules for digital assets.

SEC Chair Paul Atkins unveiled the joint initiative, emphasizing that modern, integrated markets require coordinated regulation rather than fragmented oversight that confuses investors.

The announcement closes a chapter of public disagreement between the agencies, which last year debated whether most cryptocurrencies were commodities or securities.

The collaboration was set in motion last fall when then-acting CFTC Chair Caroline Pham declared the jurisdictional dispute over. CFTC’s new chair, Michael Selig, is participating in the joint event.
