CFTC’s Summer Mersinger Suggests US Could Soon Welcome Crypto Perpetual Futures Trading
Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Commissioner Summer Mersinger indicated on Thursday that crypto perpetual futures may soon be available for trading in the United States.
“I believe these products can enter the market now,” Mersinger stated during an interview with Bloomberg TV. “We’ll likely see some of them trading live very soon. Bringing this activity back onshore in the US would be a positive development.”
Crypto perpetual futures, also called perpetual swaps, are derivative contracts that let traders speculate on cryptocurrency prices without an expiration date. These instruments have gained significant traction in global markets.
Futures trading across all cryptocurrencies reached nearly $3.7 trillion in volume last month alone.
Mersinger, who will leave the CFTC on May 30 to take over as CEO of the Blockchain Association—the crypto industry’s leading lobbying group in Washington—has previously advocated for collaboration between the CFTC and the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to establish a clear regulatory framework for digital assets.
