California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed legislation prohibiting state and local public officials from issuing memecoins.
The law also restricts digital asset service providers from offering certain memecoins issued by or in partnership with public officials to California residents. The restrictions apply to tokens issued from 1 January 2027.
The legislation adds the memecoin ban to existing rules governing outside business activities by public officials and allows state and local prosecutors to enforce the restrictions through civil action.
