The law that recognizes Bitcoin as legal tender in El Salvador has just come into force.

The country’s president Nayib Bukele tweeted about it just three minutes before midnight local time:

“In 3 minutes, we make history.”

In anticipation of the implementation of the law, Bukele has previously confirmed his government has bought the first 200 BTC as part of the $150 million new fund aimed at allowing the Bitcoin/dollars exchange.

At the moment, the country’s investment in Bitcoin amounts to $21 million.

El Salvador’s official crypto wallet Chivo is also available for download since today. We should remember that Bukele has previously announced that all people downloading it will be rewarded with $30 in Bitcoin.
