Alexey Pertsev, the developer behind the cryptocurrency mixer Tornado Cash, has appealed his conviction on money laundering charges, as reported by CoinDesk.

The appeal has been submitted to the Court of Appeal of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, though the outcome of the appeal remains unknown and could take several months to resolve.

Pertsev was found guilty by a Dutch court of laundering $1.2 billion through Tornado Cash between July 2019 and August 2022. He was sentenced to 64 months in prison and was immediately taken into custody, although he could have requested to await the appeal’s outcome from home.

In August 2022, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) blacklisted Tornado Cash for its involvement in laundering over $7 billion in illicit funds. Pertsev was arrested in the same month.

Tornado Cash co-founders Roman Storm and Roman Semenov also face charges in the United States for money laundering and sanctions violations. Storm was released on bail and has denied the charges, while Semenov remains free but under sanctions.
