Hackers Steal $750M in Crypto in Q3 2024
The third quarter of 2024 saw a decline in the number of reported crypto hacks, but an increase in the amount of stolen assets.
According to a report by cybersecurity company CertiK on October 1, there were a total of 155 incidents resulting in losses of $753 million, a 9.5% increase from the previous quarter.
The Ethereum network was hit the hardest, with 86 hacks, scams, and exploits totaling over $387 million in losses.
The biggest hack occurred on August 19 when a large amount of Bitcoin worth $238 million, belonging to a single individual, was stolen through a compromised wallet.
Another significant theft took place at India-based cryptocurrency exchange WazirX, with over $235 million stolen.
This attack contributed to a significant portion of the losses in this quarter. Overall in 2024, hackers have stolen almost $2 billion.
