UK to Expand Law Enforcement Powers to Seize Crypto
The UK government has introduced the Crime and Policing Bill, a legislative measure aimed at enhancing law enforcement’s capacity to seize illicit funds, including assets related to cryptocurrencies, originating from criminal activities.
Now in its second reading in the House of Commons, the bill is poised to bring notable changes in how courts and police manage confiscated digital assets.
If enacted, it would expand the Crown Court’s authority over confiscation orders, specifying conditions under which courts can recover funds and assess the value of irretrievable crypto property when assets cannot be liquidated.
Spearheaded by Labour MP Yvette Cooper, the Home Office has positioned the bill as essential for strengthening law enforcement capabilities.
According to an official fact sheet:
“This bill will enhance the capacity of the criminal justice system to target those who have profited from criminal activity.”
