MoonPay Secures BitLicense, Enabling Nationwide Crypto Services in US
Cryptocurrency payment provider MoonPay has received regulatory approval to operate in all 50 US states after securing a BitLicense and money transmitter license from New York’s financial regulator.
In a June 4 announcement, MoonPay confirmed that the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) granted the licenses, making it one of only 35 digital asset firms authorized to operate in the state.
“With our New York BitLicense and Money Transmitter Licenses, MoonPay now holds the complete regulatory framework for crypto in the US, allowing us to serve customers seamlessly across every state,” said CEO and co-founder Ivan Soto-Wright.
The BitLicense mandates that any digital currency business operating in New York or handling investments from its residents must obtain approval.
However, the program faces criticism, with figures like New York City Mayor Eric Adams calling for its abolition—a stance he reiterated at the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas.
