SEC and CFTC face leadership vacancies after Peirce departure

The SEC and CFTC will have only three commissioners combined after SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce leaves the agency on 2 October.
Peirce, who served at the SEC for eight years and was known for her support of clearer crypto regulation, will leave before the end of her extended term. Her departure will leave SEC Chair Paul Atkins and Commissioner Mark Uyeda as the agency’s only members.
The CFTC has operated with Michael Selig as its sole commissioner since December 2025. President Donald Trump can nominate replacements, but the White House has not announced new nominees for either agency.
