September crypto hacks push 2026 losses above $766 million
Crypto hacks and exploits caused more than $766 million in losses in September, making it the costliest month for crypto security incidents this year, data from PeckShield and CertiK showed.
PeckShield identified 55 major incidents with losses of $766.5 million, while CertiK recorded 97 incidents totalling an estimated $768.4 million. Both firms reported a sharp increase from August.
Two attacks accounted for much of September’s losses. Bitget suffered a $388 million breach, while the Liquid Network was hit for about $320 million. More than $270 million from the Liquid incident was subsequently returned.
Safe Wallet, DCENT and Duelbits were among the other affected platforms, with reported losses of $7.8 million, $6 million and $5.9 million respectively.
