Australia’s securities regulator has opened a consultation on proposed capital, custody and trading standards for crypto platforms ahead of a wider regulatory rollout in 2027.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) proposed three capital models, restrictions on platforms trading for their own account and quarterly reporting on wallets holding customer assets. It also proposed allowing offshore custody while seeking feedback on safeguards against failures involving overseas parent companies.

The guidance aims to clarify licensing, customer asset protection and financial requirements under legislation passed in April to expand oversight of digital asset platforms.
