In a bid to power its core economy, British Columbia is shutting the door on new cryptocurrency mining.

The province announced a permanent ban on providing power to new crypto mining projects, stating that its clean electricity must be prioritized for sectors that “deliver the greatest benefit to British Columbians.”

This includes industries like mining, natural gas, and low-emission LNG, which are expected to produce substantial employment and tax revenue. The policy is part of a broader framework to manage the surging demand for power and prevent the rate hikes for taxpayers seen in other jurisdictions.
