The memecoin market plummeted to its lowest valuation of the year on Friday, with over $5 billion wiped out in 24 hours.

According to CoinMarketCap, the sector’s total market capitalization crashed to $39.4 billion, a stark 66.2% drop from its peak of $116.7 billion on January 5.

This sharp decline occurred despite a 40% surge in trading volume, indicating a wave of selling pressure. The rout reflects a broader crypto market downturn, which has seen $800 billion in value erased over the past three weeks.

Leading assets Bitcoin and Ether fell 14.7% and 16% over the past week, respectively. Among memecoins, every major token was deep in the red, with the biggest names like Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, and Pepe seeing some of the steepest declines.
