The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has just announced the national airline Volaris has started accepting Bitcoin payments.

Volaris El Salvador is a subsidiary of Mexican low-cost airline Volaris. The airline has confirmed the information to The Block.

Notably, Bukele has said:

“We already have Salvadoran airline, low cost and that accepts #Bitcoin”.

The law legalizing Bitcoin as a means of payment in El Salvador, which came into force in early September, obliges local businesses to accept the cryptocurrency as payment as long as the necessary technology is available to make payments possible.

In January 2018, Brisbane airport in Australia was the first in the world to support cryptocurrencies.

In October 2021, the Venezuelan international airport Maiquetía Simón Bolívar announced it accepts payments in Bitcoin and other digital assets.
