A couple from New York has agreed to plead guilty to laundering billions of dollars worth of Bitcoin connected to the 2016 Bitfinex hack, according to The Block.

Appearances in court regarding the deal between the defendants and the prosecutor’s office are set to take place in early August. Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan were apprehended in February 2022 after being found with 94,643 BTC ($3.6 billion at that time) out of the 119,754 BTC stolen from the exchange.

Liechtenstein has been held in custody, while Morgan was released on a bail of $3 million.

The charges carry sentences of up to 25 years in prison.

After this deal is concluded, the prosecutor’s office is expected to be able to take possession of the cryptocurrency tied to the investigation.

Last month, the US Department of Homeland Security returned part of the stolen funds to Bitfinex, including 6,917 BCH and $312,219.7 in cash.
