NYSE and Blockchain.com explore tokenised US stocks
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and crypto brokerage Blockchain.com are exploring the sale of blockchain-based versions of US-listed stocks and ETFs.
The companies announced a strategic collaboration on Wednesday to examine how NYSE-listed securities could be represented as tokens and offered through blockchain networks. They have not yet said where the products would be available.
Blockchain.com already offers tokenised stocks to customers in Europe. The company and NYSE also agreed to share market data, with NYSE owner Intercontinental Exchange providing Blockchain.com with crypto data and analytics, while Blockchain.com will use NYSE data in its app.
Tokenised stocks can give investors access to equities outside traditional market infrastructure and potentially allow trading beyond standard market hours. However, such products do not necessarily provide the same rights as conventional shares, and buyers typically do not become shareholders in the underlying companies.
The partnership comes as regulators and financial institutions explore tokenised securities. The US Securities and Exchange Commission recently introduced a five-year exemption allowing certain platforms to facilitate onchain trading of tokenised stocks and other securities.
