Binance hackers used fake job interviews to steal $6.3 billion
Hackers compromised the computers of two Binance software engineers through a fake job interview and malicious software hidden in an advertisement before using a third employee’s computer to steal $6.3 billion in cryptocurrency, the exchange said on Tuesday.
Binance’s initial report described a multi-stage attack that began in June and led to a series of security breaches culminating in Thursday’s theft. The hackers continued moving funds for nearly four hours after the first theft, even as Binance restricted access to its systems and suspended withdrawals.
The FBI has blamed a North Korean hacking group, but Pyongyang has rejected the allegations. Binance said it would reimburse all customers whose funds were stolen. The breach has renewed scrutiny of security at major cryptocurrency exchanges and the growing threat of cyberattacks targeting digital assets.
