The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has approved the first perpetual futures contracts linked to individual stocks for trading on US exchanges.

CFTC Chair Michael Selig authorised the products on Tuesday, allowing platforms to offer contracts without an expiry date that let traders speculate on stock prices without owning the underlying shares. Selig said the move would give US market participants access to instruments used for risk management and price discovery.

Perpetual futures have gained traction in crypto markets, where platforms such as Hyperliquid operate around the clock. Their 24-hour trading availability attracted attention earlier this year when disruptions to oil supply occurred over a weekend, while traditional futures markets were closed.
