French Lawmakers Target Crypto in “Wealth Tax” Overhaul

In a move that could significantly impact crypto holders, France’s parliament is advancing a plan to tax digital assets as part of a new levy on “unproductive wealth.”
The proposed amendment, backed by an unusual coalition of socialists and the far-right, seeks to expand the tax base to include not just non-productive real estate, but also precious objects, yachts, and specifically, “digital assets.”
Proponent Jean-Paul Matteï claims the tax will “encourage productive investment” in the French economy. The measure now faces a critical test in the Senate, determining whether crypto will officially be categorized alongside gold and classic cars as a taxable form of unproductive wealth.
