As the Hong Kong government continues its efforts to promote the tokenization of real-world assets, HSBC has introduced tokenized gold products for its retail clients in the region.

Through online banking and the bank’s mobile app, customers can now access the HSBC Gold Token, as announced in a statement on Wednesday.

This marks the first time that HSBC’s distributed ledger, built with its digital assets platform HSBC Orion, has been used to tokenize a retail investment product. According to the press release, HSBC has previously launched digital bonds in Hong Kong and Luxembourg.

Maggie Ng, the general manager and head of wealth and personal banking Hong Kong at HSBC, expressed pride in the fact that the HSBC Gold Token, powered by HSBC Orion, is the first retail product in Hong Kong to utilize distributed ledger technology, authorized by the Securities and Futures Commission.

This launch is just one example of HSBC’s efforts to explore the potential of blockchain technology in financial services.
